Books to read

Some books recommended by our members to educate and experience all things climate and nature, accompanied by their brief thoughts.

This Changes Everything: Capitalism versus the climate by Naomi Klein

It's not about carbon—it's about capitalism. The good news is that we can seize this crisis to transform our failed economic system and build something radically better

The Coming Wave by Mustapha Suleyman

This is a story of 21st century technology, why it matters so much and what we can do to make it work for everyone.

How to Avoid a Climate Disaster by Bill Gates

Bill Gates sets out a wide-ranging, practical - and accessible - plan for how the world can get to zero greenhouse gas emissions in time to avoid a climate catastrophe. Urgent & authoritative

The Future We Choose by Christiana Figureres and Tom Rivett-Carnac

"A cautionary but optimistic book about the world's changing climate and the fate of humanity, from Christiana Figueres and Tom Rivett-Carnac—who led negotiations for the United Nations during the historic Paris Agreement of 2015. "

The Burning House by  Shantigarbha

A Buddhist and former Extinction Rebellion member. 2021. The book deals with empathy, activism, interconnectedness, anger, grief and humour

The Dandelion Insurrection: Love and Revolution, Dandelion Trilogy #1, 2013 by Rivera Sun

A great fiction relating to democracy, insurrection, environmentalism and activism/revolution. Be kind, be connected, be unafraid. Somewhat over reaching prose in places, but kind of inevitable given the epic subject, and really a great and believable telling of what could be.

Under the Stars by Matt Gaw

Absolutely beautifully written and really thought provoking love letter to the night sky. Gives an angle on our impact on the natural world that is not often considered or discussed.

The Overstory by Richard Powers

A truly amazing story. Beautifully written and truly made me view the world differently. Compelling and awe inspiring. Wasn't sure what to make of the ending, but I think that's the point. There is no ending, only still and being and connecting and life.

The Wild Places by Robert MacFarlane

Absolutely inspirational and thought provoking wonder of a book. Beautiful, profound, poetic and moving prose that conveys so much sound scientific information while also connecting to a more spiritual feeling for all living things. Open your eyes to the wild all around you by reading this book. Absolutely mind expanding.
